The mountain-bike community was abuzz this week when the organisers of the 2018 TransCape, driven by Volvo, announced a lucrative R250 000 prize purse for the event which takes place from 4-10 February 2018.
TransCape presents an awe inspiring 614km, 7-day mountain-bike journey from Knysna in the Garden Route to Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands.
The prize purse is evenly split between men, women and mixed teams while there is also a prize fund allocation for single men and ladies who take part.
The organisation is elevating the status of the event on all media channels for 2018, which includes an international television broadcast package, to ensure sufficient sponsors’ coverage for riders and event sponsors.
The route for the 2018 edition of the TransCape was unveiled last week and new route director Pieter van Wyk, in conjunction with route consultant, Johan Kriegler, have unearthed some sublime route options for the iconic 7-day mountain-bike adventure.
TransCape 2018 starts in the quaint Garden Route village of Knysna on 4 February 2018 and concludes in the beautiful Cape Winelands village of Franschhoek on 10 February 2018.
Riders will cover a total of 614km over 7 stages with a total of 10 200m of vertical ascent.
True to the spirit of the race, the 2018 TransCape will be tough, but the aim with the route is to create variety and increase rideability. This entails substantial trail creation for 2018 as well as building bridges at river crossings.
Pieter and Johan, who between them have more than 30 years of route experience in the Absa Cape Epic and FNB Wines2Whales respectively, have taken sensible route options which don’t include climbs with long unrideable rocky gradients.
They have tempered the climbing challenges to between 1000m and 1600m daily – apart from stage 2 (1900m) and the final stage (1850m).
There are two entry options for 2018:
PREMIER ACCOMODATION PACKAGE – LIMITED TO 120 RIDERS: R33 500 PER RIDER.
LUXURY TENTED ACCOMODATION PACKAGE – LIMITED TO 150 RIDERS: R23 000 PER RIDER.
Riders can enter as 2-person teams or as solo riders.
The premier accommodation package offers hotel and guest house accommodation for the duration of the journey while the luxury tented accommodation package offers luxury tents (solo riders will be allocated a partner to share in tents).
The Safari tents will feature two comfortable single beds with mattresses, ¾ pure white 200 thread count white linen, soft duvets and pillows, bed side tables, electric lanterns, blankets, carpets and chairs and towels.
The tents also include a hand basin, private shower, and toilet as well as a hand towel and to round things off 1 bottle of water per person will be placed in tents.
This means there is no need for riders to bring any linen or lights, and there is even a camp chair outside on which to enjoy the beautiful sunsets.
